All Academy students take Maths and English. Depending on which course option you choose, other subjects may also be included. The ‘Achieve’ and ‘GCSE Support’ packages include Science, while the ‘Develop’ course covers a wide range of different subjects. Click here for more information about the courses we offer.
English is taught in theme-based blocks, lasting between 6 and 14 weeks. Examples of themes include the environment, World War I and Shakespeare. Each theme has specific learning aims, clearly set out in the resources pack given to each student. This includes our Spellwell scheme, which strengthens students’ spelling and increases vocabulary. Each theme will also cover key grammar points and literacy skills linked to the national curriculum, including reading comprehension, textual analysis and creative writing. These learning targets are then tested in an exam at the end of the teaching block.
Like English, Maths is taught in theme-based blocks, lasting up to 14 weeks. Examples of topics include fractions and algebra. Themes are selected and developed by our teachers to ensure students cover all the topics they need to achieve highly in national exams. Again, learning targets are tested in an exam at the end of the topic.
Our 6-8 groups provide a stimulating and focused environment in which to develop the Maths and English skills they will need for the higher groups. Each child receives individual support to progress through a series of workbooks that are designed to cover all of the basics.
GCSE and A-Level groups move at a fast pace, covering higher material up to and beyond the requirements of GCSE and A-Level exam boards. Depending on the group, additional subjects may be covered including Science and Modern Languages.
We teach in small groups so that each student can benefit from individualized support and one-on-one time with the teacher. This ensures each child is challenged and pushed to achieve their full potential. We aim to give them the skills they need to move up to the next level as quickly as possible. There will not usually be more than 8 children in a group.
We do our best to sort our groups into students of the same ability as it means teaching and learning can be more focused. Higher ability groups can be taught higher level topics and stretched beyond what the curriculum asks of them, while groups needing greater support can benefit from sessions taught at their own pace of learning, with the opportunity to build confidence and a thorough understanding of the subject.
In English, the theme-based approach means that while learning key skills, students also learn about a particular subject and strengthen their general knowledge. We believe this approach engages students, encouraging them to explore the role of language in everything around them – from advertising boards to historical records.
In Maths, the theme-based approach allows us to take one area at a time to cover in depth. The speed at which the topic is covered is based on the amount of time students need – so we never move on to more complex material until we are sure students have a firm grounding in the basics. This empowers students to become confident and independent mathematicians.
Exams allow us to assess progress, so we can continue to target the support we give each student. They give our learners a target to aim for, motivating them to revise all of the material covered, and giving them a clear sense of how they are progressing. We encourage students to self-assess and identify their own targets for improvement.
Revising for and taking exams are also key skills that all children need to succeed in the course of their education. By becoming used to taking exams, students at The Academy will be a step ahead when it comes to SATs, GCSEs and A-Levels.
The Academy uses two main methods of testing – an end of theme exam, which helps to consolidate students’ overall learning for that subject area, and a weekly Academy Quick Test (AQT). The AQT is usually taken at the start of each lesson with the aim to test knowledge of the material taught in the previous week. Individual student AQT test results are recorded on a weekly basis, allowing us to closely monitor student progress and to keep parents informed if their child’s grades fall below 80% in two consecutive weeks.

Signing up for one of our courses couldn’t be easier. Follow our three simple steps and your child will be gaining a whole new level of teaching and learning in next to no time.
In order to provide your child with the most appropriate and helpful mode of learning, you’ll first need to book him or her in for a diagnostic assessment. This will involve undertaking tests in both English and Maths, which will then be independently marked in order to determine your child’s achievement levels in relation to age-expected national curriculum levels.
As soon as we have received the test results, you’ll be able to choose a course that’s best suits your child’s needs. There are a range of programmes to choose from and it’s important to select one that’s going to benefit your child the most. Staff from The Academy will gladly offer advice if you need help with the decision making process.
With the tests complete and your course chosen, the final stage of enrolment is a quick meeting with the head of centre to review course options and to get your child officially signed up.
Welcome! You and your child are now part of the exciting learning community we like to call The Academy.
As a parent you want the best for your child and at school age this includes a successful and enjoyable education. At The Academy we believe parental support is vital to our students’ confidence and achievement, which is why we’re intent on building strong relationships with parents and guardians.
Whether we’re tutoring your children at one of our Learning Centres or in your own home, it’s important that you’re involved. Encouraging them as they progress and praising them for the effort they’re making will serve to boost their confidence and keep them determined. By showing your enthusiasm for learning we can guarantee they’ll show theirs.
A calm and positive learning environment will also help boost your children’s focus and productivity and this is something you can help to create at home to ensure they can study without interruption.
There will also be times where we’ll ask you to be practically involved in your children’s work by marking homework tests – for which you’ll be given answer sheets – and helping with home-based activities. We’ll be liaising with you constantly and we hope that you’ll take an active interest in your children’s progress by asking us lots of questions and offering us feedback on our services.
We’re very aware at The Academy that a child succeeds best when they feel supported and encouraged by their parents and guardians. Positive praise can do wonders and if your children can see that you have a vested interest in their education, then they will do their utmost to show you how successful they can be.
At The Academy we’re committed to providing a thriving and inspirational learning environment in which students can grow as both learners and independent young thinkers. We’ve helped hundreds of students from all kinds of backgrounds to gain better results at our centres and within their own homes, and we’re incredibly proud of our achievements. There are lots of reasons to choose The Academy! Here are our top ten…
At The Academy we believe in individualized teaching and support to ensure each child is working at his or her highest level. If you decide to enrol on a course at one of our centres, you’ll see that we keep group numbers small, which allows teachers to spend crucial one-on-one time with every student.
Our teachers are recruited from a background of academic specialism in Maths, English and Science. This means they are not only knowledgeable but passionate about their subject, and really able to support and inspire students. Our teachers come from some of the top academic institutions, are QTC qualified and have achieved at least 2.1 in the subject they teach. We set homework every week to help students practise and strengthen skills learned during lesson time. This enables teachers to give targeted feedback and support, and also encourages students to become independent learners.
Every lesson starts with an Academy Quick Test (AQT) to check students’ knowledge of material covered during the previous week. This ensures any confusion is picked up immediately, so that extra support can be given. It also contributes to giving teachers, students and parents a clear idea of progress made and targets for improvement.
Every few weeks each child receives a Student Progress Report (SPR), which gives a brief update on progress, including achievements and next targets. Full progress reports, including Academy Quick Test averages and exam scores, are given at the end of each term. Teachers are always happy to speak to parents and answer any questions. We also offer formal opportunities throughout the year for parents to meet with teachers to discuss their children’s progress.
Our curriculum is designed to give students of The Academy the skills and knowledge they need for success in national exams up to GCSE and beyond. We teach in topic-based blocks, each lasting between 6 and 14 weeks. Within each topic children work towards clearly set out targets – again, making it easy to track progress and provide effective support
At the end of each topic students take an exam. This gives them a chance to show what they’ve learned and allows us to assess the progress made, so we can continue to target the support we give each student. Revising for and taking exams are also key skills that all children need in order to succeed in the course of their education. By becoming used to exam taking, students of The Academy are one step ahead when it comes to SATs, GCSEs and A-levels.
At The Academy we believe a traditional approach to learning creates a focused and stimulating environment. Children are expected to wear school uniform (black trousers or skirt and white shirt) and classes are formally structured much like school lessons. We also follow a behaviour policy with a system of rewards and sanctions.
Our lessons are based on interactions between students and teachers. We don’t depend on worksheets, computers or calculators. This allows us to respond immediately to the different needs of each group or individual, and challenges students to see what they can achieve with just pen, paper and their own brains.
Our main focus is on keeping students engaged, which means making lessons fun, interactive and meaningful. Our small groups provide an environment where every child can feel comfortable and contribute to class discussions and question-answer sessions. Our individualized approach ensures each student is constantly being challenged and stretched, giving them the satisfying feeling of making progress and encouraging them to become independent learners.
